In the old town and along the banks of the Ljubljanica there is plenty of choice by the number of bars, cafes and restaurants where you can take a break.

Restaurants in Ljubljana offer a wide and varied choice of cuisines, from traditional Slovenian and international to various national ones. What is special about eating out in Ljubljana is that a large number of upscale restaurants serve reasonably priced lunchtime menus.

The restaurants marked by the LQ sign are best overall: they offer not only the best food and service, but also the best ambience and facilities.

Slovenian must: the soup with beans and sauerkraut (jota), polenta usually made with semolina (žganci), the ravioli Idrija stuffed potato and bacon, served with a sauce of mutton or rabbit, Kranjska Klobasa (Carniolan sausage), the Kraški pršut (Karst prosciutto), the divjačinska sausage (sausage game).

From the "fusion" of different cultures, the most popular dishes are the barley soup of Austrian origin (ricet), the Italian Njoki (potato dumplings) or rizota (risotto), or Hungarian golaz (goulash).
